Burning Man: The Musical - West Coast Reading

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Dec 7th at 7 pm and Dec 8th at 2 pm

The first West Coast reading of Burning Man: The Musical will take place December 7-8, 2019 at Z Below in San Francisco. This new musical comedy about hippies vs. techies at Burning Man will be performed with a live band, and it's free for the public. Love Burning Man or hate Burning Man--this show is for you. It follows Sparkle Pony, a recent college grad, and her journey of finding herself at Burning Man despite the lavishness of her tech billionaire boss. In the desert, she finds her "earth mother" Hazel the Hippie who shows her the true spirit of Burning Man. This musical shows how sometimes the most unlikely person can rise up and do great things.

Since the original viral video trailer dropped on YouTube, Newsweek has called the show "Bizarre, possibly brilliant." Time Magazine has written that "Steve Jobs would watch this..." And Playbill writes about Burning Man: The Musical, "It's a little bit In the Heights, a whole lot of Rent, with maybe some Godspell and Les Miz thrown in."

Oakland/Alameda native and musical author Matt Werner says: "I've been to Burning Man the last 3 out of 5 years, and my sister who inspired the piece has been to Burning Man 14 times. I took the most outrageous stories I heard from my sister and stories I saw while partying with tech bros on the playa and packed them into this musical. It's been a lot of fun to work on with the composer Gene Back, and we're really excited to share this with a Bay audience." Werner continued, saying, "Some of the areas most ripe for satire were the invasion of the tech 1% at Burning Man, which is like holding a mirror back on our own society here in the Bay Area."

Noted ACT director Domenique Lozano is slated to direct the reading with Krista Wigle as music director. Music composition is by Gene Back, a multi-instrumentalist whose most recent credits include composer on the Netflix series Unnatural Selection.

Due to vulgar comedy, drug use, and adult topics, ages 13 and up are advised.

FREE and open to the public.
