Book Signing with Steven Ehrlich and Takashi Yanai

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Join us as we welcome Steven Ehrlich and Takashi Yanai of Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects as they discuss their new book Outside/In: New California Modernism.
Friends of Heath Tile, Steven and Takashi are masterful in architectural design that blurs the lines between natural and constructed environments, and their new book is no different. Through a survey of their home designs that highlight their perspective on the California Modern, the book represents beautifully the concept of bringing the outside, in. Full of drawings, photos, sketches, and source material which dig into the genesis of their designs, the book tells a story of design, material, and making a modern home.
There will be a brief intro by Zahid Sardar, Editor-in-chief of SPACES Magazine and author of the book’s foreword, and a lively Q&A, followed by drinks, bites, book signing, and chance to further mingle with Steven and Takashi among fellow architecture enthusiasts and professionals.
We look forward to sharing delicious food, good conversation, and great design with you!
Thursday, May 9, from 6–8pm
Tickets include admission, Tartine bites, and beer from Fort Point.

A bit about our guests:
Steven Ehrlich is Founding Partner of Ehrlich Yanai Rhee Chaney Architects, recipient of the 2015 American Institute of Architects (AIA) Firm Award. Ehrlich is a recipient of the AIA California’s prestigious Maybeck Award for outstanding lifelong achievement in architectural design as well as the 2015 AIALA Gold Medal Award. Ehrlich, a self-proclaimed “architectural anthropologist,” learned early on the significance of architecture’s response to the culture and to the environment. Upon graduating from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, Ehrlich spent six years in the 1970s living and working in Africa, serving for two years with the Peace Corps as their first architect in Marrakech, Morocco; he later traveled across the Sahara and taught architecture at Ahmadu Bello University in Nigeria. The wisdom of indigenous building—architecture without architects—was instrumental in forming Ehrlich’s approach to design and continues to influence the firm’s worktoday. He has lectured and taught as a visiting professor both nationally and abroad, and has intermittently taught at USC for over 35 years.
Takashi Yanai, FAIA has been the Residential Studio Director since 2004 where he leads the firm’s efforts in the design and execution of award-winning single family residences. Takashi brings a keen sensitivity and interest in site and context coupled with a strong appreciation for the craft of building and materiality born of his dual Californian and Japanese heritage. Yanai was an editor at GA Houses in Tokyo where he had the privilege of engaging with the world’s finest residential architects. Takashi is very active in the AIA Committee on Design, and is currently also on the SFMOMA Photography and Accessions Committee. He is currently a visiting lecturer at USC School of Architecture, and lectures throughout the world.
Zahid Sardar is a San Francisco-based editor, writer, and curator specializing in architecture, interiors, and design. He is currently Editor-in-Chief of SPACES Magazine. He has authored many design books, curated exhibitions, and was the San Francisco Chronicle's design editor for 20 years. His work has also appeared in The New York Times, Dwell, Interiors, Western Interiors & Design, Interior Design, House & Garden, Elle Decor, House Beautiful, and Landscape Architecture. He has taught design history at the California College of the Arts and has written several other books, including West Coast Modern, New Garden Design, and In & Out of Paris: Gardens of Secret Delights.
