In 1917, the Hallidie Building on San Francisco's Sutter Street became the first structure in North America with a glass curtain wall. Breathtaking even today, this kind of floating facade is now the norm, but back then, a non-load bearing wall for a building's exterior was revolutionary. Just down the street from Hallidie, our Sutter Street cafe's design began as an homage to this historic glass facade and then, as often happens, turned to other sources of inspiration, too: a midcentury modern highrise in New York and 1970's hi-fi style.
