THIS EVENT HAS ENDED
Rock Medicine (“Rock Med”), the pioneering concept developed by the late, legendary rock promoter Bill Graham and Dr. David Smith, the founder of the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic, turns 40 this year. To celebrate 40 years of providing mobile medical services at special events and concerts, HealthRight360 is hosting Black Tie and TieDye, a gala dinner on May 31st at the Westin St. Francis from 6:00 – 11 pm.

Rock Medicine broke new ground in treatment with its onsite satellite triage clinics at concerts and special events. Today, a mobile medical unit is commonplace at all events with most adhering to the gold standard originally set by Rock Medicine. Rock Med stands the test of time with a healthy blend of professionalism and compassion.

“Rock Medicine was a pioneer in the concept of harm reduction,” says Gordon Oldham, Rock Medicine’s Program Director, who was a volunteer for over 20 years before assuming his current role. “Rather than filling jail cells with unruly concert goers, Rock Medicine offers a safe place that is free of judgment for people to sober up and come down without hurting themselves or others. It is also the first stop for people needing ear plugs, water, sunscreen or antiseptic and a bandaid for a scraped knee.”

Rock Medicine was originally established at the request of Bill Graham in 1973 who wanted to create a medically supervised safe area for concertgoers to sober up rather than be arrested. He approached Dr. David Smith, who had just established the Haight Ashbury Free Medical Clinic to develop the concept. Under Dr. Smith’s direction, Rock Medicine was premiered at Grateful Dead and Jefferson Airplane concerts in Golden Gate Park. The results were immediate – arrest rates dropped significantly at these concerts, improving the experience for everyone in the audience.

Today, forty years later, Rock Medicine remains the Bay Area’s premier provider of emergency and triage mobile medical services. Rock Medicine and its 1000+ volunteer team of medical professionals can be found at just about every street fair, concert, and event held in the Bay Area. From Outside Lands to 49ers home games, from Bay to Breakers to the AIDS Walk, from Carnaval to the Haight Street Fair, Rock Medicine is the mobile medical unit of choice at Speedway Meadows, Shoreline Amphitheatre, Golden Gate Park Polo Fields, Oakland Coliseum, Sleep Train Amphitheatre, The Fox, The Warfield, The Fillmore, Sonoma Fairgrounds, and the Cow Palace.

The Rock Medicine professional volunteer team includes physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, paramedics and EMT’s from throughout Northern California. Though most of the medical treatment sought by event-goers is hydration, sunblock, aspirin, bandaids, and rest from over intoxication, , Rock Medicine has extensive life-saving emergency experience as well, so that any situation can be addressed immediately to ensure the comfort and safety of all in attendance.

Tickets for Black Tie and Tie Dye start at $250, and are available at https://www.healthright360.org. Additional information on Rock Medicine can be found at https://www.RockMed.org.
