* It came as no surprise to learn that Tenzin Gyatso, the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet, is a devotee of Star Trek. I found this out at Paramount studios -- where I was shown a photograph of the monks from the Tibetan leader's monastery posing on the Starship Enterprise's transporter pad. Naturally, I was seized by a desire to interview His Holiness for my forthcoming book, Future Perfect: How Star Trek Conquered Planet Earth. To my amazement, I was granted permission to meet him at his home in Northern India. But my professional mission was tied to a personal one: I was seeking the Dalai Lama's blessing for a dying friend.

Seeing you hesitate, he then gives you a shove toward the stage and you're out under the hot lights, staring out at the sea of expectant faces.
