Learn how to bead as you sew! In this 6 hour class, you will learn four basic stitches for bead embroidery on quilts and how to application of beads creates a quilted surface ($25 for kit. See below for details). Students will also create picot edges and fringe. There will also be a discussion on which pressed glass beads work well and how to deal with different types of bead holes.
The $25 kit includes a choice of 8 different fabrics, batting, backing fabric, 3 different sizes of seed beads, bugle beads, a mixed bag of pressed glass beads, thread, and needles).

Supplies to Bring: Embroidery scissors, chain nose pliers (useful but not essential, pairs will be provided for use or purchase if desired), and your lunch (students will get a half hour lunch break). Students will be charged a $25 kit fee payable to the instructor (please bring cash or check to the workshop).
Instructor Bio: Thom Atkins is Santa Cruz based artist who has been fascinated with beads for over 30 years. He has done bead embroidery, jewelry, and added beads to some of his bronze sculptures. In 2002 Thom shifted his artistic focus from sculpting to quilting with beads. Using the quilt as a canvas and the beads as texture and paint, he has developed a unique style of combining fabric and beads.
