Beach Break Film Festival

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Los Hermanos/The Brothers, screening Tuesday, December 28 at 4:00 p.m., is an Oscar caliber and contender, family-friendly documentary that illustrates through Cuban-born, virtuoso violinist and pianist brothers, how culture can succeed even when politics fail. In this gorgeous film featuring an electrifying musical score composed by Cuban Aldo López-Gavilán, the brothers are reunited through the lens of music, family and dreams. A director's Q&A with Marcia Jarmel and Ken Schneider follows the screening.

The Comedy Club screening Tuesday, December 28 at 7:00 p.m., is the story of how the legendary, San Francisco Cobb's Comedy Club has served as an independent breeding ground for comedians like Robin Williams, Ellen DeGeneres, Jim Carrey and Bill Maher. A roller coaster ride of overcoming major obstacles did not prevent Cobb's from reopening even after a fire, and it has remained open in various locations in San Francisco since 1982. Special guests on hand for Q & A.

Life on Wheels (Transportation For a New Urban Century), screening Wednesday, December 29 at 4:00 p.m., is a documentary that makes clear we must meet the transportation challenges we face today, or we may face a world in which our environment may be past the point of no return. This film offers an insightful, intelligent approach for how we get from here to there. A director's Q&A with David and HiJin Hodge follows the screening.

Knocking Down the Fences, a short film screening Wednesday, December 29 at 7:00 p.m. preceding Girls Can't Surf, tells why female superstar pro softball player, AJ Andrews, remains relatively unknown (and under-paid), despite being one of the best pro softball players in the world. Viewers will undoubtedly be cheering for Andrews as she continues her fight for justice and against gender discrimination in the world of professional softball.

Girls Can't Surf, immediately screening after Knocking Down the Fences at around 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday, December 29, is an Australian documentary that tells the story of the trail-blazing mavericks and awe-inspiring female surfers that overcame a wave of chauvinistic attitudes to make it possible for females to really compete in professional surfing and finally earn the respect they deserve. Much like the daredevils that attempt Mavericks, it is only fitting that this world-famous surf spot is just minutes away from the Festival's venue. We will be joined by a fantastic group for a discussion including lifetime surfer Kaira Wallace, Filmmaker Meg Shutzer, Surfer and Surfrider Foundation Board Ashley Gray and Mavericks Venture Founder Elizabeth Cresson.

Rita Moreno: Just a Girl Who Decided to Go For It, screening Thursday, December 30 at 6:30 p.m., is the Festival's closing night film. It is the celebratory, highly entertaining documentary, and trailblazing icon, Moreno, represents the epitome of triumphing over adversity. Appearing in the original and now remake of West Side Story that premiers this week, Moreno has overcome racial and gender stereotyping and discrimination with both humor and grace. Her story is also the story of all women who feel alone as they struggle to assert themselves under challenging (at best) situations. This film will be followed by a catered reception and Half Moon Bay Distillery tastings to close out the three day festival.
