"Bay Area Shorts," SF Dance Film Festival's annual celebration of local dancers and filmmakers, features seventeen dance films and a performance from LINES Ballet dancer Babatunji Johnson. The program is presented at the Brava Theater on Sunday October 24 at 7pm. Tickets, on sale now, are $25.
The short dance films cover a vast range of topics, reflecting the resilience of Bay Area artists. Highlights include "Hinga," a ritual time capsule honoring the sacrifices of the local Pilipinx community during the pandemic, "Milongueando en SF," a tango exploration of locked-down San Francisco's empty streets, and "Flavedoom," an allegory about consumption inspired by two classic horror films. Babatunji Johnson, a dancer with Post:Ballet, SFDanceworks, and Alonzo King LINES Ballet who will be featured on screen in the short "Bryne," will perform a solo at the screening.
"Bay Area Shorts" will also include the culmination of SFDFF's Co-Laboratory, an annual project that commissions choreographers and filmmakers to create an original dance film. This year, veteran Bay Area dance filmmaker Lindsay Gauthier teams up with Melecio Estrella and Andrew Ward, co-directors of live art organization Fog Beast, and land conservation organization Land Paths. Their film, which focuses around themes of environmental stewardship, will premiere at the Brava.
This in-theater event is part of SFDFF 2021's hybrid festival, which also features an extensive selection of films streaming online on Marquee TV from October 15-24. With 125 dance films from 25 countries, ranging from insightful documentaries to artful shorts, there's something for everyone in this lineup.
