Bar Fluxus is a new downtown cocktail bar & an intimate live entertainment venue committed to adding color and spark to the San Francisco nightlife scene.
Great bars and great art accentuate creativity, conversation and connection. Bar Fluxus embodies the state of mind that ART is LIFE: LIFE is ART. Life like art is not black and white, and San Francisco knows this better than any other city. San Francisco is as colorful as a big box of crayons and Bar Fluxus reflects this with engaging characters, vibrant cocktails and brilliant local musicians.
The music and entertainment program of Bar Fluxus is a varied mix of live and amplified music. Our calendar includes happenings like literary events, performance art, and puppet shows. Because, why not? The bar boasts a large stage and a completely "State of the Art" sound system, hosting all styles of bands, DJ's and individual acts. Most notably is the Bar Fluxus Baby Grand Piano providing a singularly unique centerpiece in our monthly entertainment programming.
So Why Fluxus?
It's an attitude. It's a creative force. It flies in the face of Dada. It refuses to take itself too seriously. It's often playful and funny. It focuses on the flow of human creativity, culture, and consciousness. It seeks continual change. It does not rely on an agendas or issues, or even art history for that matter.
In 1961 George Maciunas first used the term Fluxus during a lecture series in NYC at the A/G gallery. In 1962 he decided to turn the focus of his lecture into a magazine and a series of publications. In his 1963 manifesto Maciunas determined that FLUXUS is an artistic state of mind, free of any specific artistic style or critical interpretation. FLUXUS continued to gain prominence in the 1960's and 1970's. Some of the more well-known Fluxus Artists are: Joseph Beuys, George Brecht, John Cage, Claes Oldenberg, Yoko Ono, & Nam June Paik. These artists proclaimed themselves "a pain in art's ass". The aim was to upset the Bourgeois routines of the Art world and disrupt the routines of everyday life.
Bar Fluxus intends to hold true to the tenants of George Maciunas's Manifesto and have a ton of fun doing it.
