Babar in Exile #13: a revival of the Cafe Babar, Paradise Lounge, and Club Chameleon reading series

Yay! It’s our third birthday for Babar in Exile, a quarterly commemoration and revival of the high energy San Francisco reading series of the 1990’s, Café Babar, Paradise Lounge, and Club Chameleon. As a present to you (and ourselves), we’re featuring two former and still very active participants of Babar and Paradise, Daphne Gottlieb, author of ten books of writing from the edge, and Alvin Orloff, whimsical queer novelist and longtime manager of Dog Eared Books in SF. As well we welcome “honorary Babarian” Giavanna Ortiz de Candia, writer, musician, and photographer who will open your mind with joyous candor.
So come on down to check out a slice of Bay Area poetry history, now and in the making, and make your way home with a bindle full of inspiration and a thimbleful more hope for the species.

Daphne Gottlieb stitches together the ivory tower and the gutter just using her tongue. She is the award-winning author of 10 books including Pretty Much Dead, short stories about the people hanging on to the edge of the world in San Francisco. Previous works include Dear Dawn: Aileen Wuornos in her Own Words, letters from Death Row by the “first female serial killer”. She has won a bunch of awards, and recently finished her first novel, which is sort of about anonymous sex.
Alvin Orloff is the author of three whimsical queer novels: I Married an Earthling, Gutter Boys, and Why Aren’t You Smiling? He lives in San Francisco, works in a bookstore, and is currently at work on a memoir about how nutty club kids, queer punks, and dysfunctional hustlers weathered the AIDS crisis of the 1980s and ‘90s.
Giavanna Ortiz de Candia is a Bay Area-bred writer, musician, and photographer. In 2011, Giavanna began a two-year letter correspondence with David Jacobs, who was serving a nine year prison sentence for a white collar crime. Each letter is a comment on the ‘human condition’, love, and the art of living a life artistically, freely, and without compromise. A Story That Could Be True is a novel-in-progress based on those letters, with added artwork, photographs, cooking recipes, cards, tablature, and a playlist compiled of every song mentioned in the letters. Giavanna is the singer-songwriter for the distinguished band, The Open Minds, a sister-duo. Their music is a mixture of Outsider, Punk, and Folk. Her photography is inspired by the world around her and the subtlety that exists in the shape of architecture, gestures, and facial expressions exchanged between people within their everyday environments. Chapters of A Story That Could Be True have been published in the Oakland Review #4, Naked Bulb Anthology 2016, and RAG #8.
