Join Audio Book Club: Party Line for Women's History Month! Each Tuesday, Audio Book Club participants virtually gather for a live reading of a short story done by a professional actor, followed by a lively facilitated discussion. This month, we explore author Elizabeth Wooster Stuart Phelps, perhaps the most prolific female writer you've never heard of!
Her 1851 book, "The Sunny Side, or The Country Minister's Wife," was recognized internationally and sold half a million copies; extraordinary, considering there were only 26 million people in the entire country! Her 1852 story, "The Angel Over The Right Shoulder," was one of the first writings to focus on societal burdens of women in the 1850's. Her daughter became a feminist writer herself, as well as an early proponent of women's clothing reform. Ban those corsets, Ladies!
- This month voiceover actress Robyn Ginsburg Braverman will be reading each session.
- On 1/5/21, special guest Leah Halper joins to weave historical context, while Robyn performs "Angel...," plus the start of "Sunny Side..." Ms. Halper is a 25-year teacher of women's history at Gavilan Community College who is deeply knowledgeable about this time period and setting.
- Subsequent sessions 1/12, 1/19, and 1/26 will complete the book.
- Discussions will follow the completion of "Sunny Side..."
Tuesdays 11:00am - 12:15pm (ending time may vary depending on reading and discussion length) 1/5, 1/12, 1/19, 1/26 - Participants must register for the whole series.
Full Series: $20
This event is hosted through zoom each week. Participants are welcome to join with a telephone or video conferencing device. Access information will be sent out prior to the event.
