Aspiring Documentary Filmmaker Workshop with Director Lee Mun Wah

For the past 20 years, Lee Mun Wah, has directed and produced seven community documentaries and would like to share his wisdom and experiences with aspiring filmmakers like you. His first film, Stolen Ground, about the experience of Asian Americans, won honorable mention at the San Francisco International Film Festival, and his most famous film about racism,
The Color of Fear, won the Gold Medal for Best Social Studies Documentary; Part Two of this film, Walking Each Other Home, won the Cindy Competition Silver Medal for Social Science. In 1995, Oprah Winfrey did a one-hour special on Lee Mun Wah’s life, highlighting the importance and impact of his film, The Color of Fear, which was seen by millions of viewers, internationally.

In this special workshop, Lee Mun Wah will share with participants his decision-making for determining which film projects he decided to take on; how he was able to set up safe and authentic spaces for his diverse cast to bring forth spontaneous dialogues; the strategy, staging and equipment that he used to capture his community documentaries; the myriad of ways he has developed to distribute and promote his own work as well as the challenges and success’s he has experienced along the way. There will be plenty of time for questions, networking and the sharing personal stories. Lee Mun Wah welcomes filmmakers and anyone in search of “a way” to participate in this workshop.
