Dec 9th marks the first Solo Sundays performance devoted exclusively to Asian-American solo performers. Three audacious and very skilled actor/writers reveal aspects of their lives that Asian-Americans are discouraged from talking about. And they’re doing it in public. And, they are as funny as they are honest.
S O L O S U N D A Y S, San Francisco's premier showcase, presents select samplings of veteran virtuosos and top emerging talent. Beyond stand-up and storytelling, solo theater creates casts of thousands - plus special effects - all bursting from a single performer. The results are hilarious and heartbreaking, passionate and provocative, ablaze with personal visions.
SARAH IHN
"Maybe You Will Become the President of Senegal"
Sarah is rushing to get to her friend Hanh's house. She told Omma about it three hours ago, and yet Omma is still on Sarah's case, where are you going? What about dinner? Are you really going to Hanh's, or are you hanging out with boys at the mall like that one time? All in Korean. Sarah responds, all in English. By the way, this happened last week. Sarah is thirty-five years old and married.
KENNY YUN
"The Couch Potato Panda Rituals"
It's 1:30am. Kenny is paralyzed on the couch. Bay Area new-agers told him to move on so it should be easy. Texting him memes of unicorns shitting zen quotes and rainbows fixes everything, right?
SARAH MATSUI
"Hello, Boar--You Must Be Hungry"
It's 1994 in Hawaii, the water is cold, the sky is velvety black, and six-year-old Sarah is night diving with her dad. When something bright green flashes ahead, he takes off with his flashlight and spear, and leaves Sarah to fend for herself in the middle of the Pacific. Maybe later she can ask questions about family and what stories get passed down. But for now, she's focused on staying afloat.
