Artists Drawing Club: Rendition with Toyin Odutola

SEE EVENT DETAILS
To focus your attention on objects from the Asian Art Museum's collection, artist Toyin Odutola will provide everyone with swatches of different color combinations influencing her current work. Use the color swatches and go on a hunt in the galleries, attempting to find artworks that are as close a match as possible. Once you find a match, take a photo of the object and post on Instagram or Twitter using #colormatch. Odutola will be keeping her eye on the hashtag all night, drawing a new portrait based on your findings in the galleries.

Nigerian-born Toyin Odutola grew up mostly in Alabama, received her BA from the University of Alabama in Huntsville (2008) and MFA in painting and drawing at the California College of the Arts, San Francisco (2012). Featured in Forbes’ 2012, "30 Under 30 List" in Art and Style and the Huffington Post’s "Black Artists: 30 Contemporary Art Makers Under 40 You Should Know", Odutola is a gaining notoriety for her intricate and laborious portraits using ballpoint pen, markers, and ink. New York Times art critic, Holland Cotter describes the result, “The colors that begin each portrait show through at the end. Beaming through chinks in the dark weave they look like stars in a night sky or filtered rainbows.”

About The Artists Drawing Club: Each month, this new series invites a local contemporary artist to use the museum as a project platform, drawing inspiration from the institution to direct a unique experience for the visitor. The Artists Drawing Club provides a new lens to see the museum, its collection and the world around us through the perspectives of eight contemporary artists.
