Anna Mikkola: ‘This Earth-Like Planet’

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Thursday, September 21, 2023 at 7:00 PM

Anna Mikkola's 'This Earth-Like Planet' (2019-ongoing) is a performative reading that explores the porosity of both bodies and ideologies as well as the coexistence of synthetic and organic life forms.

With a simulation of the Earth in parallel reality set as the back drop of the piece, Mikkola's reading weaves together the stories of fantastic characters to reflect not only on how our futures are co-constructed in the present, but also on the cycle of life and death. The narrative recounts the development of the first synthetic cell on this other Earth, and the resulting artificial intelligence holobionts that emerge. Actual and speculative science merge to paint a possible picture of a world caught in the throes of dramatic ecological transformation.

The performance at Gray Area includes an original music composition and sound design by Pekka Airaxin. His droning, undulating sonic environment foregrounds a dramatic choreography from Mikkola, which is set in an immersive video installation environment.

'This Earth-Like Planet' was first performed at Rewire music festival in the Netherlands. It has since been shown at Somerset House Studios as part of their annual AGM program in 2020.
