Join Sofia Coppola, Davia Nelson, and Vendela Vida for an evening of readings, clips and conversation about the work of Eleanor Coppola in celebration of Eleanor's just-published final memoir, Two of Me: Notes on Loving and Leaving. The event will also include an exhibition showcasing Eleanor's art from across the decades.
Eleanor Coppola (1936 - 2024) was a conceptual artist and documentary filmmaker. She met her husband, Francis Coppola, in 1962, when she worked as Assistant Art Director on Dementia 13, the small, low-budget film that was Francis' first feature. The two married the next year. Eleanor went on to make several behind-the-scenes documentaries for films directed by her family. Her books include Notes: On the making of Apocalypse Now and Notes on A Life. At the age of 80, Eleanor directed her first feature film, Paris Can Wait. It was followed by her second feature, Love is Love is Love.
Sofia will talk about her mother's life and work, as well as her own art, from her iconic films The Virgin Suicides, Lost In Translation, and Marie Antoinette to her books Sofia Coppola Archive: 1999-2023 -- a collection of photographs, annotated scripts and reference collages -- and Priscilla, featuring the screenplay from her latest film with on-set photos, an introduction by Rashida Jones and an essay by Vendela Vida.
Davia Nelson is half of The Kitchen Sisters, producers of the duPont-Columbia and James Beard Award-winning NPR series Hidden Kitchens and two Peabody Award-winning NPR series, Lost & Found Sound and The Sonic Memorial Project and The Keepers, stories of activist archivists, rogue librarians, and historians--keepers of the culture. The Kitchen Sisters Present Podcast is part of the Radiotopia network from PRX. Their book,Hidden Kitchens: Stories, Recipes & More From NPR's Kitchen Sisters was a New York Times Notable Book of the Year. The entire Kitchen Sisters Archive has just been acquired by The Library of Congress. She co-wrote and co-produced the feature film Imaginary Crimes and was a Casting Director for 15 years.
Vendela Vida is the author of six books, including We Run the Tides, The Diver's Clothes Lie Empty, and Let the Northern Lights Erase Your Name. She is a founding editor of The Believer magazine and co-editor of The Believer Book of Writers Talking to Writers and Confidence, or the Appearance of Confidence, a collection of interviews with musicians. She co-wrote the screenplay for Away We Go, directed by Sam Mendes, and is a founding board member of 826 Valencia.
