An Evening with Kevin Powell: A Conversation on America Today

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Activist and writer Kevin Powell has emerged as one of the most acclaimed voices in America today, tackling some of the biggest issues of our time through his novels, essays, and speaking.
With his unique flair, Kevin interweaves brutally honest personal stories with the saga of America, then and now. Be it politics, sports, pop culture, hip-hop music, mental health, racism, #MeToo, or his very complicated relationship with his mother, he holds up not only a mirror of who we are, but also who and what he thinks we ought to be.
His most recent work has been focused on a deep examination of the last 10 years in American history, a time of great change in this country. Both the presidencies of Obama and Trump have produced some of the ugliest divides in history: horrific racial murders, non-stop mass shootings, the explosion of attacks on immigrants and on the LGBTQ community, the rise of anti-Semitism and Islamophobia, a massive gap between the haves and the have-nots, and legions of women stepping forth to challenge sexual violence—and men—in all forms.
Join CIIS School of Consciousness and Transformation Dean Kathy Littles for conversation with Kevin about this troubling progression and his gripping new collection of thirteen essays, My Mother. Barack Obama. Donald Trump. And the Last Stand of the Angry White Man.

Kevin Powell is the author or editor of thirteen books, including his critically acclaimed autobiography, The Education of Kevin Powell: A Boy’s Journey into Manhood, which is being adapted for the screen. His work has appeared in a wide range of publications including British GQ, The HuffPost, CNN, ESPN, The New York Times, Ebony, NPR, Utne Reader, The Baffler, and Vibe. A native of Jersey City, New Jersey, Kevin is a proud and long-time resident of Brooklyn, New York.
Kathy Littles, PhD is Dean in the School of Consciousness and Transformation; she is also the Director of the Transformative Inquiry Department at CIIS. In 2006 she earned her doctorate in Cultural Studies with a designated emphasis in Feminist Theory and Research from the University of California, Davis. She earned a BA in Anthropology and Art from St. Mary's College of California in 1994, and her MA in Anthropology from San Francisco State in 1998. Dr. Littles was an Adjunct Associate Professor in the School of Undergraduate Studies for ten years at CIIS, she has also taught courses at the College of Marin, Berkeley City College and UC Davis. Previous administrative positions include work with the Fine Arts Museums of San Francisco, the Cultural Arts and Marketing Division for the City of Oakland, the Cultural Council for Monterey County in Carmel, CA and University of California, Santa Barbara. Dr. Littles research interests include critical race theory, feminist theory, African Art, and the semiotics of museums and ethnic art.
