SEE EVENT DETAILS
at Yerba Buena Center for the Arts (YBCA) Screening Room (see times)
WHEN:
Feb 5–28

WHAT:
Altmanesque: New Documentary & Rarities
We present the local premiere of Ron Mann’s superb, comprehensive documentary on maverick filmmaker Robert Altman, along with some lesser-known Altman rarities and oddities.

Altman
By Ron Mann
Thu, Feb 5, 7:30 PM & Sun, Feb 8, 2 PM
This father of American independent cinema left an indelible mark, not merely on the evolution of his art form, but also on the western zeitgeist. The very term “Altmanesque” has come to denote a cinematic style characterized by dark humor, chaotic choreography, overlapping dialogue, multi-layered storylines, omniscient cinematography, and a let’s-wing-it ensemble approach to crafting a film. With the late director himself acting as guide, Altman takes the audience on a revelatory road trip through the highs and lows of this uncompromising visionary’s life and career.

Corn’s-A-Poppin’
By Robert Woodburn, co-written by Robert Altman
Sat, Feb 21, 7:30 PM
Produced before Altman’s first feature The Delinquents, this regional independent movie is a bargain basement backstage musical that puts the corn in cornpone. Country-western crooner Jerry Wallace gleefully hosts the "Pinwhistle Popcorn Hour"—until he discovers that the TV show is a corrupt ad man’s scheme to liquidate the sponsor. Produced in Kansas City, Corn's-A-Poppin' is a weird and quirky portrait of Altman's hometown and early milieu, with some great down home music. Preceded by three never-before-released short films by Altman: Pot au Feu, The Kathryn Reed Story and The Party.

Come Back to the Five & Dime Jimmy Dean, Jimmy Dean
By Robert Altman
Sat, Feb 28, 7:30 PM
"The movie version shouldn't work, but it does. When Robert Altman gives a project everything he's got, his skills are such that he can make poetry out of fake poetry and magic out of fake magic." —Pauline Kael, The New Yorker

Cher, Sandy Dennis, Karen Black, and Kathy Bates reprise their roles from Altman’s celebrated stage production in this exquisite convergence of theatre and film. In a poignant meditation on gender, power, and female identity, four James Dean devotees reconvene at their teenage hangout twenty years after the death of their beloved idol.
