AI & Sex: A Conversation with Brianna Booth & Julie Carpenter

Sexbots, life-like robots designed specifically for human sexual pleasure, will be a reality in the not-so-distant future. Some argue sex robots could drastically reduce prostitution, or even sexual crimes, while others are concerned this development will further reduce human empathy, reinforce sexism, and promote sexual violence. Most can agree this is a sexual frontier worth discussing.
Join Brianna Booth and Julie Carpenter as they speculate on the future of human-robot sexual interaction and discuss how this development could impact the future of sex, love, and intimate relationships. Considering this subject from both robot and human perspectives, Dr. Booth and Dr. Carpenter tackle issues of consent, agency, and desire as well as whether or not it is possible for a human to form a mutually satisfying, loving relationship with a robot.
Julie Carpenter earned her PhD and an MS from the University of Washington, an MS from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, and a BA from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. She is also currently a research scientist for Accenture and a Research Fellow in the Ethics + Emerging Sciences group at California Polytechnic State University. Dr. Carpenter’s principal research is about how culture influences human perception of AI and robotic systems and the associated human factors such as user trust and decision-making in human-robot cooperative interactions in natural use-case environments. Brianna Booth is compelled by a deep belief that we as a society can do better on the challenges of sexuality. She aims to transform the cultural conversation to more fundamentally level up on both the challenges and possibilities of sexuality. Dr. Booth earned her PhD and MEd in Human Sexuality Studies and a Master of Applied Positive Psychology, focusing her research on the lived experience of sexuality and the skills of navigating it well. Building on these frameworks, Brianna is creating a series of programs--Beyond Sex Ed--which take a whole-person and whole-culture approach, centered on storytelling, the skills for growth and connection, and a recognition of sexuality as an integral part of what it is to be human. She is the Director of Positive Sexuality, Design & Development at Stanford University.
