Agave Uptown in Oakland will host on Wednesday, November 7 a Voces Cellars wine paired dinner beginning at 6:00 p.m. Guests will be able to enjoy a $75.00 five-course (including an amuse bouche) prix fixe menu paired with premier Napa wines. The price is inclusive of tax and gratuity. Reservations can be via [email protected] or by calling (510) 288-3668, ext.3.

The evening’s prix fixe will include Sonoma Coast Rack of Lamb with oven roasted figs paired with a Napa Valley, Zinfandel 2012; a Scallop served over estofado, micro greens and pumpkin seeds with a Napa Valley, Red Blend 2010; Hierva Santa Mole Verde Short Ribs with chayote and granada with a Napa Valley, Petite Sirah 2012; Mole Negro De Oaxaca, rib eye steak with wild mushrooms and blackberries with a Napa Valley, Cabernet Sauvignon 2013; and Galletas Mexicanas Chocolate De Oaxaca.

Unchanged is the restaurant's acclaimed authentic Oaxacan cuisine and mezcal-focus beverage program from Executive Chef and restaurant entrepreneur Octavio Diaz.

Diaz, a native of Santa Gertrudis, Mexico, near the city of Oaxaca, grew up in a large family for whom food was a focal point of their togetherness. At age 13, his parents sent him to live with his uncle in Rohnert Park, California and he subsequently received a scholarship to attend Santa Rosa Junior College where he graduated with a degree in hotel and restaurant management. Inspired by strong ties to Oaxaca and family, Diaz’s professional goal became to bring the flavors of his homeland to the Bay Area. Initially working at places such as the Sonoma Wine Country Hilton and Petaluma Sheraton, he then opened Agave Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar in Healdsburg in 2010 serving authentic Oaxacan style food and the venue quickly became an integral part of Sonoma County’s culinary community and inspired a second location, Agave Uptown, at the Kapor Center in Oakland. With a focus on farm-raised ingredients, Diaz seeks to create a cultural experience for his diners in a family-friendly atmosphere. His mother frequently helps make the signature mole negro by hand with imported Oaxacan ingredients.

The bright and festive Agave Uptown dining room was designed by Arcsine with references to the culture and history of Oaxaca. Housed on the ground floor of the recently opened Kapor Center for Social Impact, decor highlights of the 4,000-square-foot venue include a sophisticated yet approachable color palette of cool blues and earthy reds, yellows and oranges; a teak floor that sets the foundation for wood, copper, porcelain, and braided leather accents; custom translucent porcelain lampshades, planters and votives; wall panels with jicara gourds set in translucent epoxy; banquette seating; and an open kitchen with custom mosaic tile and copper clad columns. The bar boasts a faceted display of folded steel planes; the intricate metalwork was inspired by the geometric folds of agave leaves. Lapiztola, a Oaxaca-based art collective, worked with the design team to create a compelling mural that speaks to Agave Uptown’s dedication to authentic cuisine, the creation of mezcal, social empowerment and community.

Agave Uptown is located at 2135 Franklin Street, at Broadway, in Oakland, California. Hours are Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Saturday 3:00 to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Reservation can be obtained via OpenTable.com.
