Agave Uptown to Host a Free Mole Tasting Event

Agave Uptown in Oakland is hosting a free tasting event on Saturday, March 24 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. (an early Saturday opening time instead of the usual 4:00 p.m.) to celebrate the debut of the restaurant’s in-a-jar retail availability of their acclaimed mole sauce.

There is no charge to attend the event and guests are asked to RSVP via https://www.eventbrite.com/e/mole-diaz-bros-presentation-at-agave-uptown-tickets-44158629650. Small bites of appetizers from the current Agave menu will be used to showcase mole sauce that is made with 20-plus fresh ingredients from a secret family recipe (vegan and gluten-free) and the sauce in 16 oz. jars will be available for sale for $9.49 each. There will also be a tasting of select artisan mezcals from Oaxaca, Mexico. At 4:00 p.m. there will be a mole presentation by Agave Executive Chef and restaurant entrepreneur Octavio Diaz’s mother and father, plus live musical entertainment from local band Alegres Callejeros on the restaurant’s patio.

Diaz grew up near the city of Oaxaca, Mexico and at age 13 moved to Rohnert Park, California and subsequently obtained a degree in hotel and restaurant management. After working at places such as the Sonoma Wine Country Hilton and Petaluma Sheraton, he opened Agave Mexican Restaurant & Tequila Bar in Healdsburg serving authentic Oaxacan style food that inspired a second location, Agave Uptown, at the Kapor Center in Oakland. His mother frequently helps make the signature mole negro by hand with imported Oaxacan ingredients.

The bright and festive Agave Uptown dining room references the culture and history of Oaxaca. Decor highlights include a color palette of cool blues and earthy reds, yellows and oranges; a teak floor that sets the foundation for wood, copper, porcelain, and braided leather accents; custom translucent porcelain lampshades, planters and votives; wall panels with jicara gourds set in translucent epoxy; banquette seating; and an open kitchen with custom mosaic tile and copper clad columns.

Agave Uptown is located at 2135 Franklin Street, at Broadway, in Oakland, California. Regular dining room hours are Monday through Thursday from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m., Friday 11:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., Saturday 3:00 to 10:00 p.m. and Sunday 3:00 to 8:00 p.m. Reservation can be obtained via OpenTable.com. The telephone number is (510) 288-3668 and more information can be found at http://agaveuptown.com/.
