After Dark: Sexplorations

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Looking for a hot night out on the town? Slip into something comfortable and take an intimate look at sex--you know, the transfer of genetic information through sperm and eggs, which has resulted in evolution and specialization among species over time. From the lengths we'll go to for sex to the mating rituals of insects to the naughty bits of flowers, learn about the varied and creative ways in which the natural world gets it on.

~~~
Science of Pole Dancing
7:30pm, 8:15pm, and 9pm
Gordon and Betty Moore Gallery 4: Living Systems
With Sanjay Makhijani, Joshuah Ciafardone, and Sade Symone
Physics, anatomy, and a bit of "chemistry" are all in action during a successful pole routine. Learn about the incredible forces at play and amazing muscular control required to spin, climb, and slide on a 2" shaft, all while keeping it erect. Because sometimes science can be sexy!
Demos at 7:30pm and 8:15pm; pole performance at 9pm
Live Sex Show: Sea Urchin Egg Fertilization
7:30pm
Kanbar Forum
With Mikey Brito and Ryan Cicak
Do you like to watch? Ocean critters have some of the most bizarre reproductive strategies. Join Exploratorium staff for a showcase of some of these astonishing creatures and their kinks, with a live demonstration of sea urchin spawning and fertilization.
Exploratorium biologist Mikey Brito is a part of the team that cares for the living organisms on display in the Living Systems Gallery. He's particularly fascinated by ocean-dwelling invertebrates, especially how they get busy with reproduction.
Ryan Cicak usually likes it in the dark running the Tactile Dome, but they're always eager to get hands-on and fiddle around to shed light on how things work.
Ace in the Hole: The Gamble of Asexual Reproduction
8pm
Fisher Bay Observatory Gallery 6
With James Sikes, PhD
Why do most animals reproduce sexually, even though it's energetically costly and inefficient compared to asexual reproduction? In this interactive discussion, we'll explore the evolutionary puzzle of sex, the surprising advantages of genetic diversity, and the fascinating strategies of asexual reproduction in which animals reproduce without sex to beat the odds. Throughout, we'll attempt to unravel why sex remains one of biology's greatest mysteries.
James Sikes, PhD is an associate professor of biology at the University of San Francisco. He studies the evolution and development of regeneration and asexual reproduction using flatworms as model systems.
~~~

Intimate Entomology
8:30pm
Kanbar Forum
With Ralph Washington Jr.

Sit down with expert entomologist Ralph Washington Jr. as he shares jaw-dropping (and sometimes head-popping) tales of insect sex. Be a voyeur into the bizarre mating habits of bugs--you may be surprised that human and insect sex lives are more alike than you thought!

Ralph Washington, Jr. has an MA in entomology and is a three-time national and international champion of entomological natural history trivia. One of his favorite lessons from studying the lives of small creatures is the reminder that although life can often be hard, at least he isn't a termite getting paralyzed by a toxic fart.

~~~
A Rose Is a Rose?
6:30pm - 9:30pm
Osher Gallery 1: Human Phenomenon
With Amanda Meriwether and Jordan Baker
Explore the aphrodisiac appeal of roses as we test your senses to find out what it is about a rose that says "I love you," and learn about current research developing rose scents.
~~~

Va Va Va Voom: Vintage Vibrators & Ask the Sexologist
6:30pm - 9:30pm
Gallery 2: Tinkering
With Dr. Carol Queen

Learn the history of making people feel good and check out an array of vintage vibrators and massagers. Sex expert Dr. Carol Queen will join us to answer your burning questions about sex and perhaps more importantly, pleasure.

Dr. Carol Queen is a writer, speaker, educator, and activist with a doctorate in sexology.

Sexplorations of the Mechanical Kind: Sex Toy Take-Apart
6:30pm - 9:30pm
Gallery 2: Tinkering
With The Tinkering Studio

Work with our Tinkering Studio staff to dissect electric toys and see what makes them quiver, then reuse their parts in creative ways. Space is limited; first-come, first-served. Please allow up to one hour for this activity.

The Tinkering Studio is an R&D team at the Exploratorium that develops opportunities for visitors to "think with their hands:" engaging with phenomena at the intersection of art, science, and technology by making something tangible and personally meaningful.

Special thanks to Good Vibrations for their generous donation of electronic toys.

Love Nest
6pm - 10pm
Bechtel Gallery 3

Milkweed bugs can get it on for hours on end, literally; they mate by sticking their back ends together. Scientists think their stamina stems from competition: a male doesn't want another bug's sperm to outdo its own. Come check out our milkweed bugs' love nest and see how it's done, so to speak.

~~~
Move and Groove: Dance Party with Amal
6:30pm - 9:30pm
Bechtel Gallery 3
Dancing is a recognized courtship ritual in many species and can be involved in sexual selection. Test out your evolutionary fitness on the dance floor to a sensual DJ set.
Amal is a DJ, music curator, and event producer based out of Oakland, California. With music at the center of her work and creations, Amal's multifaceted sound, inspired by her Egyptian roots and the diversity of the Bay Area, holds no genre boundary. From R&B to future beats, soul to world, house to hip-hop, and everything in between, Amal's work holds a common thread of building feeling, connection, and community.
~~~

The Bouquet Between Your Legs: Flower Dissections
6:30pm, 7:30pm, and 8:30pm
Bechtel Gallery 3
With the Explainers

Flowers are key to some plants' reproductive processes--and some of their reproductive structures bear a striking resemblance to our own. Strip flowers to their naughty bits and discover the similarities, and learn about pollination along the way.

~~~
Gonad A-Go-Go
7pm, 8pm, and 9pm
Bechtel Gallery 3
Take an inside look at bull testicles, pig ovaries, or other impressively sized animal organs to track the paths of sperm and egg from genesis to union.
~~~

Endangered Species Condoms
6:30pm - 9:30pm
Osher Gallery 1: Human Phenomenon
With the Center for Biological Diversity

For the sake of the horned lizard . . . slow down, love wizard. Wrapped in colorful, wildlife-themed packages, endangered species condoms offer a fun, unique way to discuss the link between human population pressure and the species extinction crisis.

The connection between endless growth--more people, more consumption, more exploitation of land and water--and the decline of other species is well documented. Our society celebrates economic growth over well-being, consumption over creativity, and humans over wildlife. What if we could address these issues together?

Endangered Species Condoms are the perfect icebreaker to start talking about solutions that advance gender empowerment, improve well-being, and protect biodiversity.

At the Center for Biological Diversity, we believe that the welfare of human beings is deeply linked to nature. Through science, law, and creative media, we work to secure a future for all species, great and small, hovering on the brink of extinction.

Specialty Cocktail: My Bloody Valentine
Available at all Seaglass Bars while supplies last
With tequila, lime, grapefruit, hibiscus, and sparkling wine. Served on the rocks, the MBV is a delicious mashup of some of our favorite libations. One part Paloma, one part Jamaica, and one part champagne--a beautifully balanced trio if there ever was one. How better to celebrate and explore!
