A historical drama, "The Well" tells the trepidations of an Algerian village embargoed by French soldiers during war-torn Algeria under French colonialism. In the middle of the Algerian War of Independence, soldiers of the French army suspect a village in southern Algeria of hosting the mujahedeen. The soldiers surround the village and the vulnerable villagers are gradually faced with thirst. The villagers soon realize that they have to either confront the soldiers, or die of thirst.
Award-winning Filmmaker Lotfi Bouchouchi presents a unique non-binary take on Algeria's struggle under French rule. Departing from all the codes of the genre, Bouchouchi adopts a radically new vision and narrates his story from the perspective of women and men disrupted in their everyday life and faced with a threat to their survival.
"The Well" was selected to represent Algeria at the 2017 Academy Awards.
