Abraham in Flames is a WORLD PREMIERE opera about risking everything to find one's truth. It was created and written by Niloufar Talebi with composer Aleksandra Vrebalov and director Roy Rallo.
It is inspired by the stunning imagery in iconic Iranian poet Ahmad Shamlou's life and poetry, and the biblical tale of Abraham who risked everything when he endured trials by fire to speak his truth. The opera is written for a girls chorus as its main character, Girl, who is tugged at by 5 adult soloists playing Knowing, Happiness, Angel, Poet, and Fear, to find her truth.
Abraham in Flames is also the title of one of Shamlou's books. The opera features the Young Women’s Chorus of San Francisco lead by Dr. Susan McMane. It was incubated in partnership with the Merola Opera Program and showcases several talented Merola Program alumni. With soloists Ryan Belongie, Renee Rapier, Nikki Einfeld, Kirk Eichelberger, Andrew Metzger, and The Living Earth Show.
