There are more than 5,000 native plant species in California—nearly one third of which are now rare or endangered. Join us for a presentation by Matt Ritter, author of California Plants: A Guide to our Iconic Flora and A Californian's Guide to the Trees Among Us followed by a conversation between Matt Ritter and Daniel Gluesenkamp, Executive Director of the California Native Plant Society.
Matt Ritter and Daniel Gluesenkamp will share photos and stories about California’s spectacular flora and natural areas. A small selection of native plants will be available for sale. A book signing will follow the presentation with books available for purchase.

About our speakers:
Matt Ritter is a professor in the Biology Department at Cal Poly, San Luis Obispo, where he shares his passion for plants with those looking to engage with and understand the amazing world around us. As a scientific author, he writes to foster a sense of appreciation for California’s unique flora. A Californian’s Guide to the Trees Among Us and California Plants: A Guide to our Iconic Flora, are two such examples. Ritter has also published writings focused on Eucalyptus trees, horticulture, ecology, and plant taxonomy. In his spare time, Ritter enjoys construction, masonry, and woodworking having gained an appreciation for wood and trees while growing up in Northern California next to a wooden boat builder.
Dr. Daniel Gluesenkamp is the Executive Director of the California Native Plant Society and works with staff and chapters to protect, understand, and celebrate California’s native flora. Dan first fell in love with California plants (and CNPS) as a student at UC Santa Cruz, and earned with Ph.D. at UC Berkeley studying the ecology of invasive thistles. He previously worked as Executive Director of The Calflora Database, where he led the development of exciting new tools for conservation and research, and as Director of Habitat Protection and Restoration for Audubon Canyon Ranch’s 30 preserves. Dan is a founder of the California Invasive Plant Council, and in 2009 rediscovered the presumed-extinct Franciscan manzanita growing on a traffic island at the Golden Gate Bridge.
