The producers behind The Kilbanes’ "Weightless," the hit rock opera-retelling of Ovid’s "Metamorphoses," will present "A Lesson From Aloes" at San Francisco’s Z Below this summer. Written by internationally-acclaimed playwright Athol Fugard, this New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award-winning “Best Play” is set in South Africa during apartheid. It follows a liberal white Afrikaner who believes in resistance, his unsettled English wife struggling with the personal costs, and a black activist who has everything to lose, painting a portrait of loyalty, race, sanity, and survival under an oppressive government. This freshly revived production features regional theatre’s brightest stars, including Broadway actor Victor Talmadge (David Mamet’s "November," "The King & I," "The Lion King"), award-winning producer and actor Wendy vanden Heuvel (Signature Theatre, Guthrie Theatre, Magic Theater), and Bay Area favorite Adrian Roberts (San Francisco Playhouse, Marin Theatre Company, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, La Jolla Playhouse, Lincoln Center). It will be directed by Obie Award winner Timothy Near.
