A Geriatrician Speaks: Making a Difference to Seriously Ill Older Adults

SEE EVENT DETAILS
For over 17 years, Louise Walter, M.D. has been a faculty member at University of California, San Francisco, serving as UCSF's Chief of the Division of Geriatrics for the last 5 years.
And, during that time, she has cared for many older adults with complex serious illnesses.
On Tuesday afternoon, at Institute on Aging, Dr. Walter will share heartfelt accounts of older patients she's had the honor of serving, and will offer important clinical and personal lessons learned from them. These stories will eloquently illustrate the profound impact and reward of assisting those who are living with serious illness.
Dr. Walter will also introduce core principles of geriatric care that have been shown to improve quality of life for people with complex serious illness.  In addition, Dr. Walter will discuss policies and programs that support or hinder excellence in health care for older patients with challenging conditions.
By the end of her presentation, attendees will be able to:

Describe the role of geriatrics in the care of patients with complex serious illness.
Explain at least two clinical lessons which improve health outcomes for patients with complex serious illness.
Name at least two policies and programs which support or hinder excellence in health care for patients with complex serious illness.

Instructor: Louise C. Walter, MD is a Professor and Chief of the UCSF Division of Geriatrics.  Dr. Walter received her MD from Stanford University and completed a residency in Internal Medicine and a fellowship in Geriatrics at UCSF prior to joining the UCSF faculty in 2001. She is an internationally known clinician-researcher and a primary care geriatrician at the San Francisco VA Medical Center. Dr. Walter has transformed the field of Geriatrics with landmark studies demonstrating the fundamental importance of life expectancy rather than age in determining benefits and risks of medical tests and treatments. Dr. Walter is a Principal Investigator of the UCSF Geriatric Workforce Enhancement Program award from the Health Resources and Services Administration which supports the UCSF Optimizing Aging Collaborative. She is the Director of the San Francisco VA's Health Services Research and Development Program to Improve Care for Veterans with Complex Comorbid Conditions.
