A Cappella - Our Bodies Sing

Oakland Ballet Company presents its 2016 spring repertory season production, A Cappella – Our Bodies Sing – an extraordinary evening of dance and live music that embraces the beauty of the unaccompanied human voice in concert with the beauty of the moving body.

A Cappella – Our Bodies Sing will feature three new works - two world premieres and one West Coast premiere – to make up a dynamic evening of dance and live music that incorporates a wide variety of styles.

World Premiere
Choreographer -Val Caniparoli

Ensemble - Berkeley Community Chorus Singers, directed by Derek Tam
Mr. Caniparoli’s new work is inspired by the folk tunes of American composer Stephen Foster, often referred to as the father of American music.

Choreographers - Janice Garrett and Charles Moulton

Ensemble - Vajra Voices, directed by Karen R. Clarke

9 women's voices and 10 OBC dancers bring to life the pure and crystalline medieval harmonies of Hildegard van Bingen, a German Benedictine Abbess, composer and philosopher.

West Coast Premiere: Stone of Hope
Choreographer - Graham Lustig

Ensemble – Nona Brown and the Inspirational Music Collective, directed by Nona Brown

10 dancers and 10 choral members perform to modern arrangements of five Spirituals, a newly commissioned composition by Nona Brown, and narration from Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech delivered August 28th, 1963.
