Using videos in which Josiah has captured birds and their habitats, he will lead us on a bird safari getting up close and personal with many cool, fierce and cute locals we have probably never seen before. Looking to birds as “environmental indicators” he will go over some of the prevailing and fundamental ecological concepts in our area and see how these create opportunities and challenges to our native feathered friends.Footage includes several species of local raptors, owls and perhaps a dozen songbird species. Josiah will discuss identification, behaviors, foraging methods and breeding requirements of some of San Francisco’s most emblematic bird species. Understanding the ecology of local birds will not only make each of us a better naturalist but also a better habitat advocate and steward as well.
Josiah Clark began birding and exploring San Francisco as a kid. He was taught and inspired by local birding and nature masters from a young age and had the opportunity to study ornithology and botany starting in high school. He went on to study ornithology, vertebrate biology and restoration ecology at UC Santa Cruz. Josiah Clark has been focusing on the ecology of San Francisco and the greater Bay Area for over 20 years. Through work in the field, nursery and classroom he has become specialist on urban wildlife and creating habitat in city parks. He is a regular consultant for the San Francisco Recreations and Parks Department where jobs have include conducting breeding bird surveys, habitat assessments and leading biodiversity training for city gardeners.
