The Most Heavenly Tater Tot Creations Around the Bay Area

Just as we recover from Croissant Day, another delicious holiday is sneaking up on us, begging you to throw our diet regimen straight out the window—National Tater Tot Day! Yeah, seriously. The perfect bar snack and the ultimate hangover cure in one golden, crispy package. The humble tater tot reigns supreme among the starches, and it’s never been trendier. Here are our favorite creative takes on the childhood throwback, in San Francisco and beyond.
The Riddler’s Tater Tot Waffle
To the urban foodie, the Riddler’s waffle needs to introduction. The Hayes Valley champagne bar serves a dreamy mash-up of tater tots crisped in a waffle maker, smoked salmon, creme fraiche and caviar, which embodies high-low luxury. A recent development on the already cult theme includes a version with prosciutto, mustard and arugula and, during brunch hours, the whole concoction can be topped with a poached egg. Who says you can’t have it all?

WesBurger ‘n’more’s Skewers
Trust WesBurger, the fast-food-perfecting Mission spot, to do wonders with tots. Sure, the regular menu offers delicious, indulgent tots. However, on the late night menu of The Den, the tiny bar next door, which welcomes hungry partygoers from 11-3am Friday and Saturday night, you’ll find crazy-good Nashville chicken and tater tot skewers, complete with pickles and packed with flavor. Indeed, it’s drunk food, but at its very finest.

Breakfast at Tiffany’s tater tot skillet
The long-time favorite San Francisco institution still serves its loyal Portola customers away from all the hype, and still offers one of the most magnificent tater tot dishes in town—the mighty tot skillet. A revolutionary take on breakfast, the skillet marries the tots with a selection of toppings, from kale and mushrooms to ham, bacon and cheddar. The generous portions, and the hearty flavors, will keep you coming back.

The Tatery’s Dona Asada
The somewhat secret, incredibly addictive tater tot pop-up out of Oakland took the tot and made it “loaded and grown-up.” We can live with that. Of their creative dishes, served at various events and street food festivals, the Dona Saada tots (grilled steak, crema, cotija cheese, pico de gallo, onion escabeche, and cilantro) might be our favorite.
SoMa StrEat Food Park’s 3rd Annual National Tater Tot Day
If you know you love tater tots but haven’t found that kindred spirit of dishes, head over at the SoMa StrEat Food Park on Saturday, February 3rd. With 15 local vendors and 25 unique tater-tot creations. And there’s live music and craft beers. Tater tot party!
