Preview: My Morning Jacket @ Bill Graham Civic Auditorium

Arguably one of the last great modern rock n’ roll bands, My Morning Jacket returns to San Francisco, December 2 at the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium.

2011 has been quite the year for My Morning Jacket. Between releasing their sixth studio album and a relentless touring schedule it is somewhat amazing Louisville, Kentucky natives are able to catch their own breath.

In May the seasoned rockers released the critically acclaimed record Circuital. The album’s 10 songs exhibit the type of diversity lost among modern rock groups with the ability to channel different genres from psych and experimental tracks like “Victory Dance” and “Holdin on to Black Metal” to smooth straight to the point southern rock songs like the title track “Circuital” and “Outta My System.” Circuital is a perfect reflection of My Morning Jacket as a group, it shows them sticking to what the are best at while exploring different sounds under the rock umbrella.

My Morning Jacket is no ‘studio band’ however, just ask anyone who has seen them live. Whatever emotion, feeling or sound produced on studio records is amplified ten fold in a live setting and the group’s tour schedule proves they are in high demand. This summer the band grabbed mainstage headlining spots at top U.S festivals including Bonnaroo, Lollapalooza, and the Hangout Festival to name a few. After touring the states the group went overseas for a month long headlining stint in Europe. Their live performance accentuated by loud guitars, drums, and frontman Jim James’ unforgettable voice have lead them to wide success. They are a jam influenced group with solid recordings- a hard middle road to find in most bands these days.

Opening for My Morning Jacket will be funk soul singer Sharon Jones & The Dap-Kings. The group has been hailed as one of the leaders in the funk and soul revivalist movement in a hope that music of today can return to some of the roots that highlighted the 1960s and 1970s. Jones is no stranger to working and playing live with more jam influenced groups as she has collaborated with a number of related artists and groups including Phish and Lou Reed. She even performed a song on the David Byrne-Fatboy Slim collaboration Here Lies Love. At the end of October of this year Jones & The Dap-Kings released a brand new album Soul Time!

My Morning Jacket play the Bill Graham Civic Auditorium on Friday, December 2nd. The show begins at 7:30 pm.
