47th American Indian Film Festival

SEE EVENT DETAILS
Since its inception in 1975, the mission of the American Indian Film Festival (AIFF) has steadfastly been the cultural exchange--through the power of film--of Native American and Canada's First Nations cultures. While the content is by, for and about Indigenous storytellers, AIFF remains a film festival for all audiences--from filmmakers whose intent is to inform, educate, enlighten and entertain all viewers.

With the American Indian Film Institute director Mytia Zavala at the helm carrying on the work of her late father, founder Michael Smith, AIFF welcomes film fans back to the Bay. After two years of virtual film festivals, the American Indian Film Institute is excited to bring AIFF Season 47 in-person to film fans in San Francisco, featuring live events, panel discussions, food demos and an award ceremony to showcase and celebrate the best of Native film.

The opening night program features the local film, INDIANLAND, where filmmaker Liz Irons regathers the group of occupants on Alcatraz Island who sought to negotiate treaty rights to the land. In 1969, a few years after Alcatraz closed down its prison, a group of young Indians took over the island for 19 months, despite the lack of heat, electricity, and water. The stories of this group, 50 years later, are told in INDIANLAND back on Alcatraz Island.

Also on Friday, November 11th at 320 Florida Street, SF
11:00 AM - Film Panel
2:00 PM - AIFI Fundraiser: Cooking Demo with Crystal Wahpepah
