Pop-Up Magazine Offers Escape with a New Concept

Pop-Up Magazine events are never a bad idea. Clever and thought-provoking, the live ‘magazine’ performance leaves you inspired, at the very least, and most likely, you’ll leave exhilarated.

While the concept has always been an array of vignettes about modern life, nostalgia, quirky characters and innovation, this upcoming round of shows is going to be a bit different. This time, right on track with the media’s preference for packaged, neatly formatted content, Pop-Up Magazine is adopting a theme… Escape. How timely.

“Our shows typically span a variety of topics, like a general-interest magazine, and we’ve wanted to experiment with a themed tour for a long time,” says Anita Badejo, Executive Editor and host. “We landed on ‘Escape’ because it felt so relevant and timely given the current state of the world. No matter our circumstance, we could all use a little escape — from the past, politics, the Internet, climate change, negativity, even ourselves.”

Who and what will these upcoming shows include?

Stories from comedian Jordan Carlos (HBO’s Divorce; Black Mirror); poet Sarah Kay (Project VOICE); writers Chris Duffy (Wyatt Cenac’s Problem Areas), Clio Chang (Jezebel, The New Republic), and Keri Blakinger (Houston Chronicle); musician Left at London; and many more. The subject of escape, as you may suspect, will take on different meanings and interpretations; from playful to serious.

“The theme is broad enough that it encompasses stories as weighty as those on migration and criminal justice, and lighter fare like stories about travel or escaping your meme,” Badejo adds. “Like any Pop-Up Magazine show, there will be stories that make you laugh out loud, heartbreaking stories, and stories that you’re thinking about long after you leave the theater.”
