Ann Patchett Comes to San Francisco

This fall, New York Times bestselling author Ann Patchett will be coming to San Francisco and the Bay Area in support of her forthcoming novel, The Dutch House. Patchett has three events in the Bay Area and is a featured headliner as part of the 20th Anniversary Litquake (October 10th – 19th).

Patchett is known widely for State of Wonder, Commonwealth, and Bell Canto; and her latest book is being called one of her most powerful novels to date.

Set at the end of World War II, The Dutch House is the story of Cyril Conroy, who “…combines luck and a single canny investment to begin an enormous real estate empire, propelling his family from poverty to enormous wealth. His first order of business is to buy the Dutch House, a lavish estate in the suburbs outside of Philadelphia. Meant as a surprise for his wife, the house sets in motion the undoing of everyone he loves.”

What do we love about Anne Patchett?

She has a way of writing that is accessible and honest. Her characters have flaws that drive us crazy but that feel connective and human and real. As a person, Ann Patchett is just fun to listen to. Pretentiousness be damned. She’s accessible and informed, funny and interesting.

Check her out on The Colbert Report, where she spoke about why she thinks independent bookstores are important, how she started a bookstore (Parnassus Books) in Nashville, and her rationale for why you should go to a bookstore instead of buying online. It’s a truly classic line… “If you never ever talk to people, and you meet all of your needs on the internet, you wake up one day and you’re The Unabomber.” (Her words, not mine.)
