Rosanne Cash and Ry Cooder Perform the Music of Johnny Cash in San Francisco

Here’s a unique opportunity to experience the music of Johnny Cash as performed by his daughter Rosanne Cash and acclaimed guitarist Ry Cooder. The War Memorial Opera House will be the stage on December 5th and 6th – tickets for the show on the 5th tickets are almost sold out!

Rosanne Cash is a former SFJAZZ Resident Artistic Director who performed with Ry Cooder as part of SFJAZZ’s 2017-2018 Season. During her pitch to perform with him again, Ry Cooder suggested, “‘What springs to mind is a show of your dad’s songs.'” She admits, “I’ve spent almost 40 years avoiding that very thing, but when Ry suggested it, oddly, I didn’t even hesitate. I said, ‘Okay, let’s do Johnny.'”

Ry Cooder is a six-time GRAMMY winner and the producer of the famed album Buena Vista Social Club. His admiration for Johnny Cash is clear, “…one day they played Hey Porter on the aircraft worker’s radio station… It was like a hand reached out from my little Sears radio and grabbed me by the shirt and said, ‘you’re coming with me now…'”

In a 2010 interview, Rosanne said she strived to make her own path as a musician, but then she gave in, “At some point it’s extremely ungracious to keep denying your legacy.”

Although Johnny Cash passed away in 2003 at age 71, his status as a great American singer, songwriter, author and advocate is still legendary. And now, Rosanne Cash carries on the musical torch for straight-ahead, no frills Country / Americana / Rock music.
