New Live Music Space ‘SoundBox’ Set to Open in Hayes Valley

A new, experimental performance venue, SoundBox, is scheduled to open its doors in Hayes Valley on December 13 with a series of nighttime music selections curated by San Francisco Symphony.

Previously used as a rehearsal room at the rear of Davies Symphony Hall, the space has been transformed into a night club setting with room for mingling and cocktails and state-of-the-art acoustics that are adaptable to a variety of music types. An in-house bar will offer cocktails, wine, beer and snacks.

As part of the inaugural performance, San Francisco Symphony Music Director Michael Tilson Thomas will curate an evening program to demonstrate the venue’s sonic range by navigating listeners through a “musical tasting menu.” The night will include everything from Medieval Gregorian chant to John Cage’s Branches, where musicians play cactus and tree branches. Multiple stages and screens around the room will create a fully enveloping experience using projections and video installations.
