One Dead After America’s Cup Boat Capsizes

Tragedy in the waters on the Bay Thursday as a member of the Swedish America’s Cup team died after the team’s boat capsized near Treasure Island.

The Artemis racing team boat tipped over around 1:15pm about a half-mile north of Treasure Island. All 13 sailors on board were pulled out of the water by rescue crews. One member, later identified as Andrew Simpson, was taken onshore as team paramedics performed CPR. But he died a short time later.

Simpson, a British double Olympic medalist, was trapped underneath the boat after it capsized, according to the racing team. “The entire Artemis Racing team is devastated by what happened,” said CEO Paul Cayard. “Our heartfelt condolences are with Andrew’s wife and family.”

Still no word on what caused the catamaran to capsize, although reports are that winds were a bit stronger than normal on the Bay.
