Now Open: Mission Rock Resort & Oyster Bar

San Francisco’s newest waterfront restaurant venture is opening its doors in the ever-expanding Mission Bay neighborhood.

Mission Rock Resort & Oyster Bar is the latest venture from the Golden Bear Family of Restaurants (MoMo’s, Pete’s Tavern, Pedro’s Cantina). The enormous space was formerly occupied by Kelly’s Mission Rock. It covers more than 10,000 square feet and provides seating for 160 guests, both indoors and outdoors respectively. There is a definite laid-back atmosphere in terms of the design (MBH Architects and Kathy Bloodworth Interior Design); a fireplace, large oyster bar, huge decks both upstairs and downstairs and views of the Bay throughout. Much of the wood used in the design is reclaimed from UC Berkeley’s Memorial Stadium as Peter Osborne, founder of Golden Bear, is a big Cal fan.

Although beautiful views are great, the food has to match at any new restaurant and Mission Rock has enlisted executive chef Tony Flier and chef de cuisine Sam Ehrlich to man the kitchen. The menu will be locally-driven, featuring sustainable seafood and meat and produce from local farms. Obviously, oysters will be a huge draw and Flier and Ehrlich have sourced from some of the best spots on the West Coast – Alcorn, Naked Ray’s Beach, Quilcene, Pearl Points – plus those closer to home like Drake’s Bay and Tomales Bay. East Coast varieties will also fill the menu. There will also be a cool Tasting Tour option for parties of 2-4 people which features the very best raw seafood available. The rest of the menu is heavily slanted towards other large and small seafood items (smaller: Dungeness Crab and Bay Shrimp Lettuce Cups, Littleneck Steamers with Sourdough Garlic Bread, Oyster Po’ Boy Sliders; larger: Fish and Chips, Seasonal Seafood Pasta) but with a “From the Shore” section as well (chicken, risotto, ribeye, “The Rock Burger”).

The beverage program will be overseen by Thomas Ream and feature a wide range of locally brewed beer on draft, by-the-bottle offerings and wines from both the Old World and New World. The bar will also offer a number of nouveau and classic cocktails.

Mission Rock Resort & Oyster Bar opens Friday, August 10 and will be open for breakfast, brunch and dinner. The restaurant is located at 817 Terry Francois Blvd., near Third Street and Mariposa. Hours are 7:00 a.m. – 11:00 p.m., seven days a week.
