Born in Santa Cruz, Jay Moriarity cut his teeth on the waves at Mavericks in Half Moon Bay, achieving national fame when a picture of a wipeout at the surfing spot made the cover of Surfer magazine. The upcoming film follows Moriarity as he sets out to surf Northern California’s biggest wave—also, one of the biggest waves in the world.

Portrayed by Jonny Weston, the film also stars Gerard Butler—who had a near-death experience after he drifted into big surf during filming—as local surfing legend Frosty Hesson (based on Mavericks founder Jeff Clark) who becomes Moriarity’s mentor during his quest.

A local film in the truest sense of the word, most of it was shot in Pacifica, San Mateo and Santa Cruz. While Moriarity died tragically at 22 in a diving accident, his legend still lives on.
