Literary Events: Why America Failed, The Reeducation of Cherry Truong & More

This week’s best literary arts events include author appearances by Morris Berman, Dave Eggers and Aimee Phan.

Author Morris Berman‘s presents Why America Failed: The Roots of Imperial Decline, this Thursday at Modern Times. Why America Failed is the third volume of Berman’s trilogy on America’s collapse. In it, Berman analyzes American culture and writes on how the tools of our “‘hustler’ culture” that lifted America to the top, is also what’s crushing the American empire.

Local lit hero, Dave Eggers will receive INFORUM’s 21st Century Visionary Award this Thursday at Herbst Theater. Eggers, the founder/editor of McSweeney’s, beloved author of A Heartbreaking Work of a Staggering Genius, and co-founder of 826 Valencia (to list only a few of his achievements), will be in conversation with a surprise guest this Thursday.

On Monday, author Aimee Phan shares The Reeducation of Cherry Truong, at Books Inc. in Opera Plaza. Phan’s latest novel tells of two bitterly divided and yet bound together families — the Truongs and the Vos — who escape from a post-war Vietnam and, ultimately, face their mistakes and memories.
