More Sweet Treats for Valentine’s Day

Valentine’s Day is just around the corner, which means that pastry chefs around the country are scrambling to complete customer orders. The 3 days leading to this holiday are among the busiest time of the year, other than Christmas, for most bakeries and sweet confectioners. So if you are still indecisive on what sweets to get for your sweetheart, we have a few more last minute suggestions.

For some of the most elegant and beautiful baked confections in the Bay Area, pastry chef Belinda Leong has you covered. A veteran of top rated restaurants Gary Danko, Aqua, and Manresa, it doesn’t get any better than this. This year features a trio of Valentine’s Day special desserts: Grande Macaron Cake, a pistachio macaron with vanilla creme, mascarpone, fresh raspberries and raspberry gelee – 5 inches diameter, serves 2-3 people, for $25 each; Chocolate Caramel Mousse Cake, a flourless chocolate cake layered with Valrhona chocolate mousse, milk chocolate ganache, caramel chips and housemade rice krispy pearls – 3.5 x 5 inches rectangle, serves 2-3 people, also $25 each; and a special version of her famous Kouign Amann, filled with raspberries and red currants, “Bleeding Heart” for $4.50 each.

Pastry chef couple Dennis and Catherine from DeLise Dessert Café in North Beach, are showcasing a new line up of Valentine’s Day themed sweet treats, starting today Friday, February 10. Among the new goodies are more macarons flavors, like the Szechuan pepper filled with passion fruit and milk chocolate truffle, and heart-shaped honey and black truffle shortbread cookies for just 95 cents each. Really, any of their regular decadent mini pastries, macarons, brownies and cupcakes would make a great gift. Or bring your sweetheart to sample their housemade organic ice creams, sorbets and frozen yogurt, with exotic flavors like vanilla bean cookie crunch, kumquats, sesame, honey tahini, coconut pandan, watermelon margarita, etc. And their signature Peking Duck Scones in honor of the Chinese New Year are still available.

At the other end of the price spectrum, Krispy Kreme Doughnuts has launched a “Spread the Love” holiday promotion with a playful commercial, new heart shaped doughnuts, and free Valentine cards with any dozen doughnuts order – the card includes a coupon for one free doughnut. The campaign coincides with the opening of its first San Jose store, the fourth Bay Area location after Mountain View and Union City. The only local branch is in Daly City. Open 24 hours.

Have a happy Valentine’s Day!
