From City Hall to Ocean Beach, this week’s gallery openings go well beyond First Thursdays at 49 Geary.

This Thursday, head to City Hall for the opening of You Look Familiar, a photography show set up in conjunction with PhotoAlliance. The collection of work features 19 local artists and explores what it means to be part of a group.

Speaking of pastry artists, local chef Elizabeth Faulkner, will be one of many celebrity judges at this year’s Sandcastle Contest, this Saturday at Ocean Beach. In it’s 28th year, the annual contest  is sure to make big waves with the theme, “Sandblast“. From 10am to 2pm, the public is invited to team up with architects to work on a giant rocket ship. The event is free, but donations are encouraged and will be donated to Leap, a local non-profit that supports art education.

On Saturday evening, kitschy pastry artist, Scott Hove will present his latest solo-show, Your Deadly Desserts, at Modern Eden. The gallery will be transformed into a virtual cake cave, but it won’t be all pink and pretty — expect wicked fang and horns, too.
