Catamaran Capsizes During America’s Cup Demo

It was meant as a preview of the catamarans that will be used in the 2013 America’s Cup race in San Francisco, expected to be some of the fastest boats in the long-storied history of the race.

But it turned scary when Oracle Racing crewmember Shannon Falcone suffered dislocated rib cartilage when he was thrown from the capsized AC45 catamaran during Monday afternoon’s demonstration.

Helmsman Russell Coutts also fell from the boat, but did not need medical attention.

The catamaran capsized as it was being maneuvered into place for its second media exhibition race of the day.

An Oracle chase boat picked up Falcone and brought him to a San Francisco Fire Department rescue boat. He was taken to the hospital for precautionary x-rays.

Monday marked the first time the Oracle Racing team has sailed in its home waters since winning the 33rd America’s Cup in Spain last year.
