Recipes: Getting Ready for the Kentucky Derby

Saturday is Kentucky Derby day and for many that means watching the races, maybe a wager or two and sipping on a Mint Julep.

To get you in the mood, Chow.com released a number of different recipes this week, featuring many favorites in the south.

Below, their take on the world-renowned Mint Julep:

TIME/SERVINGS

Total time: Under 5 minutes

Active time: Under 5 minutes

Makes: 1 drink

INGREDIENTS

3 sprigs fresh mint

1 teaspoon water

1 teaspoon superfine sugar

2 ounces bourbon

INSTRUCTIONS

1. Muddle 2 mint sprigs, the water and the sugar in a highball or collins glass or a silver julep cup.

2. Fill the glass with crushed ice and pour in the bourbon.

3. Garnish with the remaining mint sprig.

Variation:

Brandy Julep: Omit the mint sprig garnish. Substitute brandy for the bourbon and garnish with a slice of orange and a maraschino cherry.
