City College of San Francisco Developing New Major

Officials at City College of San Francisco are working to create an associate’s degree major in lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender studies, which would be the first of its kind in the U.S.

According to the Golden Gate Xpress, the college was the first institution of higher learning in the country and second in the world to develop a LGBT studies department.

LGBT Studies Department Chair Ardel Thomas said it seems only appropriate to offer a major in the field.

“Our department would benefit from having a major because students are asking for a major in the field to transfer and continue their studies at four year and research institutions,” Thomas told the Xpress.

If approved by the state community college board in Sacramento, Thomas said “students who enroll next semester will be able to take courses in the department that will count towards an associate’s degree in LGBT studies.”

San Francisco State, UC Berkley, UC Davis, UC Santa Cruz and Stanford all offer some sort of certificate in LGBT studies, but none offer it as a major.
