Supervisor’s Agree on America’s Cup

Even though a local team won the greatest sailing event on the globe, it’s still up in the air where the 2013 event will be held. A few weeks ago, an agreement to hold the event in San Francisco seemed to be a done deal. That was, until Mayor Newsom floated a revised plan; which irked some America’s Cup organizers.

SFGate:

The Board of Supervisors voted 11-0 today to approve a bid put forward by Mayor Gavin Newsom for hosting sailing’s premier regatta. It was revised substantially in recent months to minimize the city’s costs.

“This is truly, I believe, not just the best bid for the city, but the best bid internationally for the America’s Cup,” board President David Chiu said before the vote.

We’ll soon find out if the city’s offer is enough as The Cup’s organizing body has pledged to announce the host city by Dec. 31st.
