at Notre Dame de Namur University - Theatre (see times)
The Notre Dame de Namur University Labor Day Theatre & Dance Festival, now in its 18th year, produces original, often locally written, plays in two separate series geared for adults and children, along with an original dance performance by New Ground Dance Theatre Company. Conceived by Robin “Dutch” Fritz, the Technical Director and Production Manager of the Notre Dame de Namur University Theatre Department, the Festival is a critically acclaimed showcase for aspiring playwrights and directors to launch new works. Casts and production staffs come from all over the Bay Area and also include current students, alumni and staff of the NDNU Theatre Department. Associate Producer Karen Byrnes directs the Children’s Festival, as well as her own work, “Baba and Me”, and “Jacqueline Kennedy” by Leslie Goddard.

About the Dance Festival performance:
“Into the Unseen” by New Ground Dance Theatre Company directed by Coleen Lorenz.

About the Adult Theatre Festival performances:
“Baba and Me” by Karen C. Byrnes. Ms Byrnes, a graduate of NDNU, has acted and directed for NDNU, Hillbarn and Coastal Repertory Theatres, as well as taught drama in many Bay Area elementary schools. Her play illustrates the importance of appreciating our grandparents, our family traditions, and leaving a legacy.

“Three is Better Than Two” by Diahanna Davidson. Ms. Davidson, a graduate of Millikin University, Chicago, is an actress with extensive credits at City Lights, Jewel, Campbell, and Dragon Productions Theatres.

“Missadelphia - 1961” by Dan Eeds. Mentored by Director Gigi Benson, Mr. Eeds developed his play during Mae Meidav’s Brookside Repertory's Writers Workshop in Berkeley where he is currently working on a young adult historical novel, Columbus, Lost in Paradise.

“Jacqueline Kennedy” by Leslie Goddard. Ms. Goddard holds a Ph.D from Northwestern University, specializing in U.S. History, as well as master's degrees in theater and in museum studies. She presents historical lectures and performs first person programs.

“Trailer Park Gods” by Panayiota Kuvetakis. Ms Kuvetakis, a UC Berkeley graduate (with Honors) in Literature and Theatre, recently completed a series of 6 short plays with Greek themes.

“Spoken Word Poetry From the Streets” with Khoree (Cory Page) and friends. Mr. Page, a graduate of NDNU, and his friends bring “skills of rhythm and rhyme, observation and life-time who perform live, hip poetry most sublime.”

About the Children's Theatre Festival performances:
Plays adapted from stories submitted by youth in three age categories (5-7, 8-10, 11-14) to the Festival’s "What's Your Story?" writing contest: "The Mystery of the Balloon" by Autumn Sanders; "The Haunted Theatre" by Claudia Haines; and "The Trouble With Hunting" by Axel de Vernou.

"Sing and Dance & Meet the Sporteenies" is based on Sporteenies created by Donna Imsand (an NDNU alumna). Donna Imsand, a very talented athlete turned artist and author, created the Sporteenies, a sports brand to inspire girls to pursue active sports and uphold sportsmanship and meaningful values. Director Karen Byrnes wrote music and added choreography to Donna Imsand's words and “cheers” to create these real life scenarios about having heart and being in the game.

"The Girl Who Believed in Unicorns", a short play by Karen Byrnes and Ari Wayne, tells the story of a young girl who stands up for her beliefs and conveys a charming message about being steadfast.

"Baba and Me" written by Karen Byrnes is a personal narrative about a young girl's relationship with her Russian grandmother. The play is set in San Francisco from 1952-1963 and illustrates the importance of appreciating our grandparents, our family traditions, and leaving a legacy.

"The Legend of the Secret Knight" a play with music by Karen Byrnes portrays a young girl aspiring to be a knight like her father who ultimately discovers a power far greater in herself than knighthood. A powerful message to conserve our resources, end violence and promote critical thinking underscores the play’s theme.
