This year the Mt. Diablo Peace and Justice Center is proud to honor and recognize individuals Peter Phillips, Ph.D. and Corrina Gould, as well as the organization, Project Censored for its annual Peace and Justice Awards.
Peter Phillips Ph.D, is a Professor of Political Sociology at Sonoma State University, former director of Project Censored from 1996-2010, and served as the President of the Media Freedom Foundation until 2017. A long-time activist, educator, and award-winning author, Phillips has led and organized a number of dedicated grassroots efforts advocating for a free and open press. He is also our distinguished keynote speaker for the evening.
Corrina Gould is an indigenous activist and educator in the Bay Area. Gould has worked on preserving and protecting the ancient burial sites of her ancestors in the Bay Area for decades. She is the co-founder and lead organizer for Indian People Organizing for Change, a small Native-run grassroots organization dedicated to social and environmental justice.
The Center will also be recognizing the organization Project Censored. Founded in 1976, Project Censored has initiated over 2,500 students into the world of investigative journalism and censorship at dozens of colleges and universities nationwide. In doing so, they have amplified the voices and stories that are overlooked and uncovered by the mainstream press.
The public is invited. We look forward to a night of celebrating community! In addition to a full-course meal we will have illuminating speakers, a live band, silent auction and a raffle.
