About The Cooler:
Popular culture gets a bad rap. We say it’s shallow, or meaningless, or irrelevant -- yet we consume it in droves. We click it, read it, share it… then say we have no interest in it. Yet… this is the stuff that surrounds us! Popular culture is the parts of our world, from music and movies to the online thoughts of public figures, that preoccupy us constantly, and have done for centuries. You think It Girls got invented with Paris and Kim? Nope: we’ve been talking, writing and analyzing the movements of these kinds of public figures for hundreds of years. Yet the more popular something is, the more we deny our interest in it -- or at least keep it a secret.
This stuff -- the public themes, issues, problems and people that hold our attention -- is fascinating. So let’s talk about it.
