Cypress Quartet's Salon Series II

SEE EVENT DETAILS
The Cypress String Quartet will perform the second program of its 2014-15 Salon Series in three concerts: Saturday, February 7, at the charming Kanbar Performing Arts Center in San Francisco; Sunday, February 8, at the verdant garden setting of the Woman's Club of Palo Alto's Clubhouse in Palo Alto; and a special added date, Friday, February 13, at the beautiful Maybeck Studio for the Performing Arts in Berkeley.

Salon Series concerts offer audiences the opportunity to experience chamber music in an up-close-and-personal, exhilarating format, with informative introductions to the music given by members of the quartet at each concert. This year, the Cypress explores three pairings of early and middle Beethoven string quartets in concerts that will run approximately two hours and culminate with chocolate and a tasting of exceptional German and Alsatian wines provided by Dee Vine Wines.

On the program are Beethoven's dark and brooding String Quartet Op. 18, No. 4 and his wonderfully optimistic Op. 59, No. 1, which is featured on the Cypress' new 3-CD set. In addition, Cypress revisits a CSQ commission by Jeffery Cotton entitled Serenade.

Known for its elegant performances, the Cypress String Quartet has been praised by Gramophone for its "artistry of uncommon insight and cohesion," and its sound has been called "beautifully proportioned and powerful" by The Washington Post. The Cypress Quartet was formed in San Francisco in 1996, and during its initial rehearsals the group created a signature sound through intense readings of J.S. Bach's Chorales. Built up from the bottom register of the quartet and layered like a pyramid, the resulting sound is clear and transparent, allowing the texture of the music to be discerned immediately.

The members of the Cypress Quartet play exceptional instruments including violins by Antonio Stradivari (1681) and Carlos Bergonzi (1733), a viola by Vittorio Bellarosa (1947), and a cello by Hieronymus Amati II (1701).
